This lecture will encourage public discourse and dissemination of information around the legal and procedural safeguards against torture and ill-treatment in detention, and the role of the legal profession in respecting and promoting the Méndez Principles.

We are delighted to have Ruth Ssekindi as our speaker giving context based on her role as the Director for Monitoring and Inspections, and previously the Director of Complaints, Investigations and Legal Services at the Uganda Human Rights Commission. Fellow expert Isabella Obara, Team Lead of Legal Advice and Litigation at Independent Medico Legal Unit (IMLU) Kenya, will also be in attendance.

Opening remarks shall be provided by the Deputy Chief Justice of the Republic of Malawi, Honourable Justice Lovemore Paul Chikopa.

Around the world, false confessions and the unreliability of tainted information arising from abusive practices have led to flawed decision-making, wrongful convictions, and gross miscarriages of justice. Grounded in science, law, and ethics, the Méndez Principles provide a solution-oriented approach to moving away from confession-based interrogations towards rapport-based interviewing associated with legal and procedural safeguards. Please join us to learn more about the Principles from renowned experts.
